Katherine Semar Junior School in Saffron Walden received a £500 donation to make their end-of-term festivities special.

The Essex Royal Arch Masons arranged a grant of £10,000 from provincial charitable funds to support 20 primary schools in the county, similar to a scheme they ran last year.

Recent school budget constraints have meant that some planned celebrations have to be cut back to save costs.

The extra money is intended to help schools with activities which otherwise would have been cancelled.

Elliott Chevin, the deputy grand superintendent in Essex, said:" It is the children who lose out through no fault of their own.

"We consider this especially so for younger children and want them to share in the excitement at school leading up to Christmas."
