Saffron Walden will mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day next month with a variety of events throughout the day.

The events, organised by Saffron Walden Town Council, will take place on Thursday, June 6.

At 8am, the town crier will issue a proclamation in the Market Square, followed by a wreath laying with the Royal British Legion at the War Memorial at 11am.

Other events include a 'Group Battle' physical training session from midday to 12.45pm on the Common, led by 33 Engineer Regiment from Carver Barracks.

Individuals do not need to book. However if groups such as schools, businesses, community groups and charities would like to take part they should email their interest to events@saffronwalden.gov.uk.

At 1pm, the film The Great Escaper will be shown in collaboration with Saffron Screen Pop-Up Cinema.

The film tells the story of Bernard Jordan, played by Sir Michael Caine, who escapes from his care home to attend the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings in France.

Tickets are free, with the option of booking a fish and chips lunch in advance at the Tourist Information Centre.

At 9.15pm a beacon will be lit at the Turf Maze on the Common - arrive from 8.30pm.
