The North West Essex Conservative Association has selected Maria Pearson as their candidate for the upcoming Saffron Walden Town Council by-election.

The by-election for Castle and Little Walden ward will take place on Wednesday, June 12, filling the vacancy left by Cllr Kirstie Frost standing down.

Maria lives with her family at The Railway Arms in Station Road, where her husband Graham is the landlord.

She served as a borough councillor in Brentwood for many years, and has also sat on two parish councils.

Maria said: "Saffron Walden is a beautiful and historic town and I am proud to call it home.

"One of the advantages of living in a pub is that I get to hear the varied views of residents continually and I understand the issues that affect the town’s businesses.

"Issues such as the state of our pavements and lack of grass cutting – which makes the town look shabby and dishevelled are high on the list of annoyances.

"Lack of facilities for our young people is also one. Carpark charges which affect our town’s businesses and their staff, is also a huge issue for our businesses.

"R4U have controlled the SWTC for many years without challenge or scrutiny. This is unhealthy for democracy and scrutiny is always required for good governance.”

"If elected, I will bring new ideas and a challenging voice to Saffron Walden Town Council on my residents’ behalf.

"I will be available to residents, and I will work constructively with R4U to benefit the town, its residents and its businesses."

Also running in the by-election are Cherry Parker, for Labour, Lucy Brett for R4U and independent candidate David Sadler.
