Independent candidates Erik Bonino and Andrew David Green have explained why they are standing for North West Essex in the general election.

Former Shell UK chairman Erik Bonino, 61, has lived in Henham for 18 years with his wife Ruth and their two children.

Following a 35-year career in industry, Mr Bonino now focuses on public service, advocating for a society that "rewards effort and risk-taking while protecting its most vulnerable".

His campaign priorities include improving education, health, wealth and the environment, emphasising government and community roles.

He is also passionate about increasing funding for schools, having witnessed first-hand the impacts of investment shortages.

Mr Bonino said: "We deserve better from our political system. It's time for honest and capable MPs who are deeply rooted in their communities.

"We need a government that makes sensible choices and prioritises the well-being of its citizens.

"Let's bring better politics and real people back into it."

Also running as an independent is Andrew David Green, who is from a fifth generation of Essex farmers.

Explaining his reason for running, Mr Green said: "After 25 years in the film music industry and following a couple of instances where the NHS has been instrumental in – literally – getting me back on my feet, it’s time to give something back.

"Traditional farming and agricultural businesses are the foundation for the evolution of our rural economy.

"We’ve a hugely dynamic emerging food, drink and hospitality sector alongside firms embracing new technologies; in my current work, my eye is keenly on AI and the challenges of social media.

"We have fantastic local volunteer and sports networks and community arts provision through Saffron Hall, Thaxted Festival and Saffron Screen bringing creativity and opportunity to the next generation.

"But together, we can do more - and better."

Mr Green explained that his focus will be on improving infrastructure, supporting businesses, and providing first-class education, health and social care, making North West Essex "a great place to live, work and raise a family".

Also running in Uttlesford are Kemi Badenoch (Conservatives), Edward Gildea (Green), Niko Omilana (independent), Smita Rajesh (Liberal Democrat) and Issy Waite (Labour).

Reform UK candidate Grant StClair-Armstrong was deselected by his party after blog posts were uncovered where he encouraged people to vote for the far-right BNP.
