A cycling discount scheme has been introduced to encourage people to get on their bikes and visit independent businesses as part of the Saffron Walden Clean Air Project.

Uttlesford District Council has reached out to tourist attractions, cafés, restaurants and shops in the town to offer cyclists a 'Pedal Perk' - thanking them for supporting the journey to cleaner air.

The council has recently launched a series of bike offers, including hiring bikes through App-Bike, Saffron Walden Bike Club and the 'Our Bike' community e-cargo bike.

Under the new Pedal Perks scheme, a cyclist can hop on any of these services and benefit from the deals, or ride their own bike and pick up the same perks.

All they need to do is show their cycling helmet at the point of purchase to redeem the offer.

Businesses taking part include Audley End House and Gardens, Saffron Grange Vineyard and Audley End Miniature Railway, as well as special offers at Blossom Bites café, Kappa House and Church Street Gallery.

Sarah from English Heritage said: "Audley End House and Gardens is delighted to be taking part in this scheme to help encourage car-free adventures where possible.

"We’re looking forward to welcoming visitors via public transport or bike, and those that do will receive 20 per cent off their admission ticket."

Visitors who travel to Saffron Grange Vineyard by bike can get a 10 per cent discount off coffee, tea and cakes on Wednesdays, whole those who cycle to Audley End Miniature Railway will be treated to a free hot drink.
