Saffron Walden U13s’ batsmen steered the team to victory over Cambridge St Giles on the opening day of the season.
Adam Oakley, Louis Tremblett and Bertie Scott all retired on 32 runs as Walden posted an impressive 173-2. Scarlett Hughes (28*) and Josh Perry (23*) also took a liking to the bowling to add some late runs.
Walden’s openers, Max Hurlstone and Henry Rodda (1-15) kept scoring opportunities to a minimum as Cambs had to opt for singles and twos to keep the score ticking over.
A spectacular direct-hit run out from Perry (2-6) turned the screw and he added two wickets, the first via a catch from Harry Ball, in short bowling spell.
Runs became harder to come by from the controlled spin of Harry Cooke (1-7) before two wickets in a single over for Louis Temblett sealed the result.
