Another edition of Saffron Walden's own triathlon produced the same results - sheer delight for organisers WaldenTRI.

The club's home event, based at the Lord Butler Leisure Centre, proved a great success again and had the backing of glorious sunshine.

This was the 24th annual triathlon and attracted almost 160 entries from novices and seasoned competitors alike across the sprint (400m swim, 23k cycle, 5k run), super sprint (half distance) and relay formats.

In a fantastic atmosphere the female sprint race was won by WaldenTRI’s very own Grace Mason, in a time of one hour 14 minutes 50 seconds, while Lee Shipp, of Tri Anglia, was the open winner in 1:05:23.

The H&E Team Science group were convincing overall relay champions, recording a time of 1:16:53 with YacYak Vintage Models the first of the female relay teams home in 1:34:30.

Victories in the female and open super sprint events were taken by Olivia Sanders from WaldenJNR (43:12) and Kalle Van Paridon of Cambridge Triathlon Club (37:20).

A spokesman for the club said: "WaldenTRI were delighted to be able to make a contribution from proceeds raised by the event to the Laughter Specialists charity, which improves lives through laughter and entertaining sick and vulnerable children.

"As well as bringing joy to children in hospitals and special schools in the region and beyond, the charity also emphasises research, collaboration, and inclusivity, aiming for a broad impact across all communities and age groups."

WaldenTRI's chairman Ben Bely extended thanks to all competitors who made the effort to travel to Saffron Walden as well as to everyone who made the event possible including the team of 68 marshals, the staff at the Lord Butler Leisure Centre, members of Turpin’s Indoor Bowling Club, The Giggly Pig Company, Truckhiato Coffee and residents.

He also stressed the club’s gratitude for sponsorship received from Newdales Cycles and Accessories, Saffron Autos, Greenwood Financial Planning and Pottrill Holland Property Agents.
