Elsenham WI welcomed speaker Gary Matthews to their March meeting, for a talk about the history of the Gardens of Easton Lodge.

Gary told members about the lodge's most famous owner the Countess of Warwick, who was known as Daisy, and took them through pictures showing the restoration of her gardens.

Members learnt about Daisy's early life, her relationship with Edward VII, her philanthropic acts and her conversion to socialism later in life.

Gary also shared the work of the Gardens of Easton Lodge Preservation Society, whose volunteers have transformed the neglected formal gardens, tree glade and walled kitchen garden since 2011.

These gardens have a world-renowned display of snowdrops and open days throughout the year, which raise funds for their upkeep.

After the talk the WI members broke into a rousing chorus of 'Daisy, Daisy' - a song which is said to be inspired by the Countess of Warwick.

Moyra Jackson, president of Elsenham WI, said "Gary gave such an informative talk about a local landmark, and now knowing they cater for group visits, I’m sure it will be on the list for a members’ outing."

Elsenham WI has a full programme of activities and is always keen to welcome guests and new members.
