Saffron Walden Rotary is holding a collection for the people of Ukraine next week.

The event will take place from 9am to 1pm on Saturday, May 11 at The Common.

Rotary will be collecting everyday food items such as pasta and rice, toiletries, warm clothing, cleaning materials, torches, batteries, and crockery.

The ongoing conflict has placed constant strain on people in Ukraine, many of whom have been displaced and are in dire need of basics.

Much of the donations collected from the previous Rotary events have gone to the heavily bombarded Chernihiv, which is close to the volatile Russian border.

Cash donations will also be accepted to fund the purchase of food pallets.

Rotarian John Tapscott, who organised the collection, said: "These collections have resulted in support being delivered by the Felsted-based charity UK-Aid to centres in Ukraine and Moldova, helping hundreds of families.

"We are very appreciative of the support from local people that our past collections have attracted and in the last few weeks there were shipments including fourteen generators we purchased from the last collection.

"We have received tremendous support in the past and are hoping that we will get a good response again for those living in such hardship."
