Lord Butler Fitness and Leisure Centre (LBFLC) in Saffron Walden will host a number of events to mark World Mental Health Day on Thursday, October 10.

Saffron Walden Town Council is working with the leisure centre to increase awareness and raise funds for the mayor's charities, as well as highlighting how you can improve your mental wellbeing through exercise.

A selection of classes will be available to attend on the day for members and non-members, along with drop-in rowing in the foyer.

Members can book classes in the usual way, while non-members can book by calling 01799 522777.

Charity donations are welcome by cash or card for wearing pyjamas or blue to the classes, and donations should be made prior to attending the class. Prizes for the best dressed will be awarded on the day.

LBFLC general manager Alan Carter said: "The Lord Butler Fitness and Leisure Centre are delighted to be working alongside Saffron Walden Town Council to help raise funds for the Mayor’s chosen charities (Mind in West Essex and Saffron Walden Citizen’s Advice) on World Mental Health Day, by running some activities throughout the day.

"Research has shown the important link between exercise and improving mental health - by reducing anxiety, depression, and negative mood and by improving self-esteem."

Morning classes include a spin class, body pump, body combat and body balance - with attendees asked to wear pyjamas.

Evening classes include Pilates, Zumba and body pump, and attendees are asked to wear a splash of blue.

Visitors are invited to try the rowing machine in the foyer and see if they can row 1,000m in five minutes, or they can contribute to the community goal of reaching at least 35km during the day.

A Mind in West Essex representative will also be in the reception area to talk about the work they do in the community.

Mind in West Essex chief executive Alison Wilson said: "35 per cent of Britons say they have had to take time off work due to stress over the past year.

"We are aiming to reflect on this number by rowing 35km during the day."
